Youth2Independence (Y2I) Project
Congratulations to our southern technicians who have just wrapped up the $980-thousand Hobart Youth Foyer contract.
Contact Group started the early works component of this major Tasmanian Government project in May 2022 and was contracted by VOS Group to carry out the general electrical, access control, fire detection system and installation of the MATV system.
Located in Campbell Street, the five-storey building built on the site of an old carpark, contains 26 apartments for vulnerable youth, as well as an apartment for an onsite manager, a gym, games room, communal kitchen, and outdoor garden.
Most importantly, the building has an “urban community hub” where support and education services will be available to both residents and non-residents.
The project is part of the state government’s Youth 2 Independence (Y2I) Program, which combines housing and training to break down structural barriers affecting young people at risk of homelessness.
Contact Group was proud to be part of this important development, which follows our completion of Thyne House in Launceston earlier this year, which is also part of the Y2I Program.
Project Manager Paul Gleeson said it was a great learning opportunity for multiple apprentices and a wonderful team effort from all our technicians.
Paul said it was a difficult location, one of Hobart’s busiest one-way streets, with very little parking, nominated crane days and multiple tradespeople working in tight spaces.
“We had to be extremely organised to ensure all the services could work together and with the design evolving we had to be agile and flexible with the placement of cables,” he said.
Some very high-end and delicate pendant lights required hours of research prior to assembly and installation, with Sam Beresford rising to the challenge and doing an excellent job.
